IPTV and the law: rights, licences and GDPR

Published 2 September 2026 Last updated: 2026-10-01

The IPTV market is full of providers of unclear standing, and telling a lawful service from one that only looks the part is useful before you pay anything. This guide does not lecture anyone: it simply explains the criteria for judging a provider, starting with who holds the rights. TV8Live distributes only content it is authorised to broadcast, and this page explains how we verify that.

The right question is not “how many channels”

Channel count is the most-used sales argument, but it says nothing about legality. A provider can claim twenty thousand channels and own a hundred legitimate ones, or declare three thousand and hold every licence. A more useful indicator is something else: transparency about who runs the service.

Three questions worth more than a thousand reviews
  1. What is the registered company name and VAT number?
  2. On what legal basis do you broadcast this content?
  3. Where are your Terms and your Privacy Policy?

If a provider will not answer these three questions, you have your answer.

We publish this data on the contact page and in our contractual terms, because it is information an honest provider has no reason to hide.

What the law says

In Italy, broadcasting television content requires authorisation, issued by the competent ministry and managed through the collective rights management organisations. Anyone who broadcasts without authorisation exposes end users to criminal liability and makes them an unlawful consumer: that is something no serious provider should put in your hands.

This applies to foreign channels and to streaming platforms too: watching a paid service directly without rights in Italy is not lawful, however widespread it is.

We do not ask you to break the law

This article explains how the industry works, not how to circumvent the rules. If a provider asks you to use VPNs, proxies or other tools to bypass geo-blocks, that in itself means the service does not hold the rights to offer you.

Your data rights: the GDPR

The other half of legality is your data. An IPTV service must have a Privacy Policy compliant with Articles 13 and 14 of the GDPR, must name the data controller and must offer you the rights of access, rectification, erasure and portability.

Check it in practice: our privacy notice lists what we collect, why, for how long and with whom. If a provider has no privacy policy, or a generic one copied from elsewhere, that is a sign of carelessness worth noticing.

Note this: TV8Live does not ask for identity documents or a selfie to activate a subscription. If someone asks you for them, ask yourself why.

What we commit to

Only authorised content. We broadcast only channels and VOD for which we hold the necessary transmission authorisations. No third-party lists. We do not resell playlists built by someone else, which is the mechanism behind most illegal services. Identifiability. Company name, VAT number, address and contact details are public. Transparent contract. Duration, renewal and refunds are written in the Terms and Conditions, not hidden in a grey area. GDPR-compliant processing. Minimal data, declared purposes, enforceable rights.

Refunds: what a serious provider offers

A serious provider makes it easy to get your money back if the service does not work. We offer a full refund within 72 hours of purchase, with no reason required, to the same payment method.

«No refund» buried in small print, or absent altogether, is the most important signal there is: a service that refuses to return your money when it fails does not deserve your trust. Compare plans and terms on our pricing page.
