How IPTV works: explained for beginners

If you have never used IPTV, everything sounds complicated: a subscription, three details, a playlist, a player. In reality the path is short, and you only need to understand which piece does what. This guide starts at the beginning and ends with a channel that actually plays.

Guide

The path of an IPTV signal

Five steps, from the signal to the screen. In practice it is a television that behaves slightly differently from usual.

  1. 1

    Where the signal starts

The signal begins where transmissions are licensed: a terrestrial station, a company distributing a channel, a service that has agreements with rights holders. TV8Live operates within that perimeter and [VERIFY]s the channels actually available.

  2. 2

    Travel over the internet

From there the signal travels over the internet, not by satellite. It is the same path as a video, which is why quality depends on your connection. If the line is steady, the picture is steady.

  3. 3

    Your subscription

The service knows who you are because you gave a host, username and password. When your player asks for the channel list, it is this subscription that replies and returns what you are allowed to watch.

  4. 4

    The player on your device

The program you installed does two things: it asks for the list, then when you pick a channel it asks for that channel's stream. It contains nothing itself: it is a window through which you watch.

  5. 5

    The screen

The stream arrives and plays. From there it is television as usual: channel changing, electronic guide, favourites.

The three pieces you see in every guide

Once you recognise them they stop being confusing: they are different things.

The service (TV8Live)
The service (TV8Live)Supplies the channels and authorises them. It is the only part you pay for.
The M3U playlistThe index of channels. With TV8Live you do not build one: it comes from your three details.
The playerThe program you open. It contains no channels and is free to download: what changes is what you watch and on which screen.
Why try once instead of buying a year

The chain is simple, but the hard thing to check before buying is your connection, in the evening, when everybody is watching something. A 24-hour trial for €1 puts it to the test for a whole day and tells you whether it holds on your line.

In short

IPTV is not a complicated technology: it is television arriving over the internet. Between the source and your television there is a service that authorises you and a program that opens the screen. Everything else is configuration detail.

So the question “how does it work” has a short answer: like any subscription, with one extra program acting as the remote control. If you want to see it with your own details before deciding, the 24-hour trial for €1 is the only thing that gives you a real answer.

FAQ

What is IPTV?

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television: television that arrives over the internet instead of by satellite or aerial. The practical difference is that you choose what to watch when you want and can catch up on what you missed, without having to be in front of the set when it airs.

What is an M3U playlist?

It is a text file listing the channels and, for each one, the address of its video stream. It is not a video: it is an index. The player reads it and then fetches the stream for whichever channel you switch on. With TV8Live you do not build one: your login details do that job for you.

Why do I need a host, username and password?

They are the three details your subscription emails you. The host is the service address; the username and password identify your subscription. The player uses them to ask for the channel list and then for the stream you are watching. They are the same on every device.

Do I need a fast connection?

You need roughly 10 Mbps of stable bandwidth for streaming that does not buffer, and you need it to be stable more than fast: a line that drops in the evening buffers more than a slower but constant one. If you watch on a television over Wi-Fi, keep the set near the router or use a cable.

Can I watch the same channel on several screens at once?

Yes, within the number of simultaneous connections in your plan. Every device you log into counts as one connection: phone, tablet, television and computer together count for what the plans page says.

Now that you know how it works, try it

24 hours for €1, no commitment.
